Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has defended her appointment to the Council of State, emphasizing her qualifications and commitment to providing independent and honest advice.

Akuffo, who is among the 31-member advisory body chaired by Edward Doe Adjaho, addressed concerns about her appointment after the swearing-in ceremony at the Jubilee House on Tuesday.

“I am a former Chief Justice. Am I not? Do I or do I not qualify?” she asked, stressing that she serves on the Council in her own capacity and not as a representative of the Judicial Service.

She reaffirmed the advisory role of the Council and dismissed any suggestions that members merely echo presidential directives.

“The Council of State is meant to advise the president. I am not going to be singing his master’s voice, so to speak. An adviser does not parrot. An adviser speaks with honesty and considers the best interests of both the leader and the nation,” she stated.
