The Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Interior has submitted its report on the mayhem in Ashaiman, recommending sanctions for military personnel involved in the dawn raid on May 7, 2023.
The committee's report highlighted violations of Section 32 of the Ghana Armed Forces Act, 1962 (Act 105). It recommended that soldiers engaged in excesses during the operation be identified and dealt with accordingly under the law.
According to the report, “Every person in the Armed Forces, who behaves in a cruel or disgraceful manner shall be guilty of an offense and on conviction liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or to any less punishment provided by this Act.”
Furthermore, the committee advocated for enhanced collaboration among security services, with internal security investigations falling under the jurisdiction of the Ghana Police Service.
It urged the National Security Council to promote coordination among security agencies, emphasizing the Police Service's role as the lead agency in internal security operations.
The report stressed that military involvement in such operations should be a last resort, with a focus on effective intelligence coordination to prevent future incidents.
