The Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU)-Ghana has staged a protest against the alleged sale of the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO), warning that any transfer of ownership could put workers’ jobs at risk.
The demonstration follows months of concerns by some VALCO workers, who claim the company is being prepared for sale under the leadership of GIADEC CEO Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah. They have also called for his removal.

Although GIADEC has repeatedly denied plans to sell VALCO, insisting it is pursuing a co-ownership arrangement with a private sector partner, the union says it remains unconvinced.
Addressing protesters on July 27, ICU-Ghana General Secretary Morgan Ayawine said the protest was intended to protect workers’ livelihoods and preserve one of Ghana’s key state-owned enterprises.
He stressed that the union’s actions were not politically motivated but aimed at preventing job losses and safeguarding VALCO’s future.
