On the last day of Ghana's 21-day limited voter registration exercise, hundreds of first-time voters descended upon Electoral Commission (EC) offices, resulting in lengthy queues that persisted beyond 1700 hours. Both Accra and Tema witnessed this surge in registrations.
A visit by the Ghana News Agency to the Tema West Office revealed a meandering queue of registrants patiently waiting to have their names added to the voter register.
Despite the scheduled closure at 1700 hours, Mr John Nunoo, the officer in charge of the Tema West EC Office, assured those still in line that they would be registered.
Additionally, he informed the public about another registration opportunity next year for those turning eighteen, during the continuous registration phase.
The Staff Secretary at the Tema Metro Office, Andaratu Shanwu, provided further assurance that everyone in the queue would receive the chance to register.
Mr Shanwu noted that despite initial network challenges, the registration process had been running smoothly with the assistance of IT experts and three efficient machines.
A total of 65 challenged cases were received, with 10 originating from Tema Metro and 55 from Tema West.
In response to the situation, party agents representing the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress called upon the EC to consider extending the registration period.
