Foreign Affairs Ministry dismisses fake Cambodia deportation notice

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed as fake a notice circulating on social and traditional media platforms claiming that the Government of Cambodia had directed African nationals, including Ghanaians, to leave the country by May 31, 2026, or face arrest, imprisonment and financial penalties.

In a statement issued on May 29, 2026, the Ministry said diplomatic engagements with Cambodian authorities confirmed that the alleged notice was not issued by any state institution in Cambodia.

According to the Ministry, the General Department of Immigration under Cambodia’s Ministry of Interior has also issued a clarification describing the document as “completely untrue.”

The Ministry therefore urged the public and media organisations to disregard the document and avoid sharing unverified information capable of causing fear and anxiety.

The Ministry, however, disclosed that some Ghanaians resident in Cambodia had earlier expressed interest in voluntarily returning home.

It said the Government of Ghana, through its High Commission in Malaysia, which is concurrently accredited to Cambodia, had facilitated the evacuation of 85 Ghanaians between March and May 2026.

The Ministry added that arrangements are underway to facilitate the return of an additional 76 Ghanaian nationals currently in Cambodia who have also expressed the desire to return home.

According to the statement, the Ministry is working with relevant Cambodian authorities to ensure the safety, welfare and protection of Ghanaians in Cambodia.

The Ministry also commended the Government of Cambodia for its cooperation and urged the public to rely only on official sources for information concerning Ghanaian nationals abroad.
