Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP), has addressed the 25th Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting (CFAMM) on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to the Commonwealth’s shared values of democracy, peace, and development.
In his remarks, Hon. Ablakwa commended the Chair of the meeting, Hon. Tolupe Mutele-Luku Osisoma, Deputy Prime Minister of Samoa, and congratulated the new Commonwealth Secretary-General, Rt. Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey.

He described her historic appointment as a source of pride not only for Ghana but also for the wider Commonwealth family, praising her leadership and vision for reform and renewal across the organisation.
Reflecting on the theme of CHOGM 2024, “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming Our Commonwealth,” the Foreign Minister underscored the importance of the Commonwealth’s 2025–2030 Strategic Plan.
He highlighted Ghana’s priorities, including strengthening governance, accountability, and citizen participation, as well as advancing reparatory justice to heal historical wounds and deepen global solidarity.
On climate action, Hon. Ablakwa urged urgent and coordinated efforts to address the escalating impacts of climate change, pointing to extreme weather events in Africa and the Caribbean as stark reminders of shared vulnerability.
He reaffirmed Ghana’s strong support for the Made in Commonwealth Ocean Declaration and called on member states to leverage the Commonwealth platform to champion sustainability and secure a greener, safer future for generations to come.
