Foreign affairs minister visits Latvia over death of Ghanaian student

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has arrived in Latvia for a two-day official visit.

The Minister is accompanied by a six-member delegation made up of senior directors of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a forensic expert, and a pathologist.

The visit is aimed at seeking truth and justice for the late Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian student who was studying at Riga Technical University.

The Minister held a meeting with his Latvian counterpart, Her Excellency Baiba Braže, on 2 February 2026.

The Latvian Foreign Minister assured the Government of Ghana of the full cooperation of the Government of Latvia in the pursuit of justice for the deceased student.

The Minister and his delegation are expected to engage other Latvian authorities.

The planned meetings will involve the Ministries of the Interior, Education and Science, as well as investigators handling the case.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare and dignity of all Ghanaians.
