Ghanaian musician, King Promise, has revealed that he was advised to boycott the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) after facing disappointment from previous nominations.

Despite the counsel, he chose to stay in the competition, driven by his love for his fans and music enthusiasts.

During an interview on TV3, King Promise shared, “Even with the VGMAs, there were times when I had advice from people who were like ‘cancel it, don't go again'. People say a lot of stuff, it's up to you to make what you think of it.”

Acknowledging that his fans were not to blame for his lack of award wins, the artist affirmed their unwavering support, saying, “When I drop the music, it goes crazy, so, I know the fans do support me.”

He emphasized his commitment to his fans by performing at the event even when he did not win, stating, “I always went still and performed, even when I didn't win, I go the next year to perform. It's about the fans for me.”

King Promise emphasized that losing out on awards would not deter him from entertaining his fans. His resilience and dedication paid off at the recently concluded 2023 VGMAs, where he received two awards.

“Awards or not, I was born to do this. I make this music from a special place, and it's not because of awards. So, for that fact, when we get an award, we drop bangers, when we don't get [awards], we still drop bangers, we just keep going,” King Promise affirmed.

After winning the VGMA Songwriter of the Year award in 2019 for his hit song “CCTV,” the artist experienced a dry spell at subsequent editions. However, on Saturday, May 6, at the 24th edition of the prestigious music event, King Promise triumphed by winning the Afrobeats/Afropop Song of the Year and Album of the Year, beating out fellow nominee Black Sheriff.
