The Ghana Youth Manifesto (GYM), a comprehensive document reflecting the aspirations and concerns of the nation's youth, was officially launched in Accra.
The manifesto, derived from the input of over three thousand young participants in a recent survey, encompasses key issues such as education, employment, entrepreneurship, innovation, social justice, environmental sustainability, and political participation.
Supported by the Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA) and various youth-focused Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), the launch event drew participation from diverse youth groups across the country.
Ms. Tung-Teiya Dahamani, Ghana's Most Beautiful 2022 winner and Manifesto Ambassador, emphasized the inclusivity and transformative potential of the GYM.
Ms. Dahamani stated, “The manifesto captured the expectations, hopes, and aspirations of young people with a call for action that was expected to change the plight of young people between 2024 and 2028.”
The manifesto serves as a roadmap, guiding policymakers, stakeholders, and influencers toward impactful actions that will positively transform the lives of Ghanaian youth.
The youth-led initiative called for meaningful empowerment, equitable opportunities, access to quality education, skills training, and employment prospects.
Notably, Ms. Dahamani advocated for the abolition of taxes on sanitary products, urging the government to declassify them as luxury items. She emphasized the importance of investing in the growth and well-being of the youth.
Mr. Pius Enam Hadzide, CEO of the National Youth Authority (NYA), encouraged the youth to proactively contribute solutions for government policies.
The NYA intends to incorporate the youth manifesto as one of its working documents, ensuring that the concerns raised find expression in the New Patriotic Party's manifesto for the 2024 elections.
Dr. Angela Lusigi, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative, commended Ghana's youth for their active participation in governance and elections.
Acknowledging the youth as a significant demographic, she stressed the importance of engaging them in all development initiatives. Dr. Lusigi highlighted the UNDP's commitment to prioritizing youth engagement and empowerment, including setting up a youth sounding board to influence program development and implementation.
