Parliament passes Ghana Scholarship Authority Bill to ensure fairness and transparency in scholarship distribution

Parliament has approved the Ghana Scholarship Authority Bill, paving the way for a more transparent and equitable scholarship system across the country.

Introducing the motion, Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu, who is also the MP for Tamale South, said the new law would ensure that government-funded scholarships reach individuals who genuinely need them.

He emphasised that the legislation aims to eliminate favouritism, political interference, and unequal access, replacing them with a system grounded in merit, need, and fairness.

The newly established Ghana Scholarship Authority will be responsible for setting clear eligibility criteria, enforcing compliance, and ensuring proper use of public funds allocated for scholarships. Its mandate also includes widening access for students from disadvantaged backgrounds and making the application and selection processes more transparent.

Members of Parliament who contributed to the debate praised the bill as a major step toward social justice, noting that it would help bridge the educational gap between privileged and underprivileged students.

They expressed confidence that the Authority would strengthen equal opportunity, support national development, and build a more inclusive education system.

The passage of the bill marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s education reforms, underscoring government’s commitment to fairness, accountability, and the empowerment of young Ghanaians through accessible education.
