Obuasi prison launches aquaculture project to boost inmate nutrition

The Ghana Prisons Service has launched an aquaculture project at the Obuasi Local Prison to improve food production and inmate nutrition.

The project, inaugurated on April 21, 2026, forms part of the Director General of Prisons’ Kitchen Support programme and involves the introduction of 1,000 fish fingerlings into newly constructed ponds.

An agri-consultant, George Boamah, donated 500 tilapia and 500 catfish fingerlings to support the initiative.

The Officer-in-Charge, CSP Francis D.K. Deku, led the construction of two ponds for the pilot phase, which focuses on tilapia and catfish production.

The Service said the project aims to build capacity in fish farming while enhancing inmate welfare and nutrition.

The initiative is part of the “Think Prisons 360” agenda, which seeks to transform prisons into self-sustaining and productive institutions.
