The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) Task Force has arrested two Chinese nationals and intercepted several Burkinabè workers during separate anti-galamsey operations in the Western North and Western Regions.
On Wednesday, 8 October 2025, operatives stormed the Tano Anwia Forest Reserve in Jomoro following intelligence about illegal mining along the Tano River. Access to the reserve was initially delayed by Forest Guards, but the Task Force forced entry and discovered an active mining site.

During the operation, a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 attempted to flee, resulting in the arrest of two Chinese nationals, while a third suspect escaped. Authorities found four excavators, three of which were immobilised, with the fourth disabled on-site. Investigators also uncovered evidence of river diversion, two heavy-duty water pumps, and 12 makeshift mining structures, all destroyed during the raid. Items seized included GH¢10,050 in cash, mobile phones, radio communication equipment, fuel drums, and control boards. The arrested Chinese nationals have been transferred to NAIMOS headquarters in Accra for further investigation.
Preliminary findings suggest that the suspects had been operating under the guise of the Jomoro Community Mining Project, reportedly granted by local chief Nana Kwame Nkansah. NAIMOS indicated the pair are believed to be financiers of galamsey, providing logistical and financial support to illegal miners. The Task Force warned that it would not hesitate to arrest and prosecute any foreign nationals or local sponsors aiding illegal mining activities.
In a separate operation at Essipong, near Asankrangwa in the Western Region, NAIMOS visited Bugart Mining, where Burkinabè nationals were found working near the Kwama stream and a major road. Despite claims by the owners of a 2012 licence, operatives raised concerns over the employment of foreign workers. A CAT excavator was immobilized, and the owners were directed to report to NAIMOS headquarters in Accra on Thursday, 9 October, with all Burkinabè employees for verification.
