The renaming ceremony, held at the airport grounds, was attended by government officials, aviation authorities, and industry stakeholders.
In his address, the Minister of Aviation emphasized that the new name underscores Accra’s role as a gateway to Ghana and West Africa, while promoting the country’s image globally.
“This renaming is not just symbolic; it represents our commitment to modernizing our aviation infrastructure, boosting tourism, and enhancing Ghana’s competitiveness as a regional transport hub,” the Minister stated.
Kotoka International Airport, established in 1958 and named after Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, has been the primary international gateway for Ghana for decades.
With the renaming, authorities are also planning upgrades to terminals, runways, and passenger services to meet growing demand and international standards.
The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority assured travelers and airlines that operations will continue seamlessly during the transition and that all international flight schedules will remain unaffected.
The move has been met with mixed reactions, with some praising the shift as a step toward modernization and inclusivity, while others argue that the historical significance of the Kotoka name should be preserved.
Officials have clarified that while the airport name has changed, memorials and tributes to Lieutenant General Kotoka will remain within the airport precinct to honor his legacy.
The renaming of Accra International Airport marks a new chapter in Ghana’s aviation history, signaling the country’s ambition to become a key air travel hub in West Africa.
