Accra New Town building collapse: 3 dead, 20 survivors as Interior Minister gives update

Tragedy struck Accra New Town after a building collapse claimed the lives of three people, with 20 others rescued alive from the debris.

According to Ghana’s Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, emergency response teams worked through the rubble to carry out rescue operations, leading to the successful extraction of survivors.

He confirmed that the casualties included both fatalities and injured persons, many of whom were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment.

Rescue efforts involved personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation, and other security agencies. Officials say the coordinated response helped prevent further loss of life despite the severity of the collapse.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes shortly after the incident, as residents and first responders raced against time to save those trapped beneath the structure. Survivors recounted moments of fear and desperation as the building gave way unexpectedly.

Authorities have begun investigations to determine the cause of the collapse, with early concerns pointing to possible structural weaknesses or non-compliance with building regulations. The Interior Minister assured the public that anyone found culpable will be held accountable.

The incident has once again raised concerns about building safety standards in parts of Accra, with calls for stricter enforcement of construction regulations to prevent similar disasters.

Government has pledged support for affected families while urging the public to adhere to safety guidelines and report unsafe structures to the relevant authorities.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on supporting survivors and ensuring that such tragedies are prevented in the future.
