The government has announced a new direction for health sector recruitment, with a focus on underserved areas under its “free primary healthcare” policy.
According to the Minister, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the recruitment exercise will prioritise cadres critical to primary healthcare delivery, particularly community nurses, to support services at the grassroots level.

The strategy will limit recruitment into already saturated regions such as the Greater Accra Region and parts of the Ashanti Region, while prioritising areas including the Oti Region, Western North Region, Upper East Region, Upper West Region, Savannah Region, and North East Region.
The recruitment will be conducted through an online portal with fixed district quotas. Access to each district will close once the required number of applicants is reached, with the system reopening briefly if vacancies remain after screening.
Applicants will attend interviews in their selected districts, with postings based on individual choice.
The Minister, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, said a volunteer system will remain in place to address staffing gaps, allowing qualified but unposted professionals to work in underserved areas and gain priority in future recruitment, subject to graduation-year order.
No new incentive packages have been introduced for postings to rural facilities, including CHPS compounds and health centres.
The recruitment timeline includes PIN verification from April 16–20, applications for selected cadres from April 22–25, and other allied health professionals from April 27–May 1.
Facility selection will be conducted on scheduled dates across regions.
The Minister indicated that thousands of health workers will be recruited, with successful applicants to be notified of their start dates based on government financial capacity.
The approach aims to improve equity, transparency, and the distribution of health professionals nationwide.
