The Government of Ghana has repatriated the remains of Bashiru Isak, a Ghanaian national who was killed in South Africa during the recent wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Mr. Isak, a father of three, was shot dead in Khayelitsha, near Cape Town.

The Ministry said his remains arrived in Ghana on Tuesday, July 14, and were received by family members and senior officials before being transferred to the 37 Military Hospital.
It noted that Mr. Isak’s identity contradicted earlier claims made by some South African officials.
With the family’s consent, the Government of Ghana facilitated the repatriation of the body through the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria.
The Ministry also announced that an independent autopsy would be conducted after efforts to obtain an official autopsy report from South African authorities proved unsuccessful.
Ghana renewed its call for a thorough investigation into the killing and urged South African authorities to ensure those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.
“The Government of Ghana remains committed to pursuing all appropriate diplomatic and legal avenues to ensure that justice is served,” the Ministry said.
Mr. Isak will be buried in accordance with Islamic traditions after the autopsy.
