Russia-Ukraine War

The government has launched investigations into alleged criminal recruitment networks after 272 Ghanaians were reportedly lured into the Russia-Ukraine conflict through fraudulent overseas job schemes.

Speaking at a media briefing in Accra, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said 55 of the affected Ghanaians had died, while two others were being held as prisoners of war.

He explained that many victims responded to fake job offers in construction, hospitality, logistics and security services but were instead recruited into the conflict.

The government is working with foreign authorities to verify the identities and welfare of the affected Ghanaians while domestic security agencies investigate those behind the illegal recruitment.

Mr. Ablakwa said the Mahama administration is committed to dismantling criminal recruitment networks and urged Ghanaians to verify overseas employment opportunities before travelling.

He added that the government has also intensified efforts to combat human trafficking and fraudulent migration schemes, citing recent repatriation operations involving Ghanaians from Libya, Cambodia and Côte d’Ivoire.
