The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, will hold a press briefing on Monday, September 7, 2026, to present a comprehensive report on the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa following the recent wave of xenophobic attacks.
The briefing is intended to provide a full and transparent account to the people of Ghana on the evacuation exercise.

Government concluded the exercise on Friday, September 4, 2026, with the arrival of the final batch of 41 evacuees. In total, about 1,900 Ghanaians were successfully evacuated and provided with reintegration financial support, transportation allowance, medical care, psychosocial support, free health insurance registration and ongoing employment assistance.
Welcoming the final group, Mr. Ablakwa explained that government took the decision to facilitate their return after assessing the situation and interacting with some affected Ghanaians during his visit to South Africa.
He said the visit provided him with an opportunity to personally assess the situation and noted that, despite the challenges associated with the exercise, government considered it imperative to evacuate its nationals to ensure their safety and welfare.
The Minister commended President John Dramani Mahama for his unwavering commitment to the welfare and protection of Ghanaian nationals.
He said the exercise demonstrated the high premium government places on the lives of Ghanaians everywhere in the world and sent a clear message that no Ghanaian would be abandoned in harm’s way.
