Barimah Buabasa Oppong Yaw Ababio, Gyasehene of the Dormaa Traditional Area in the Bono Region, has appealed to the government to dual-carriage the Sunyani-Berekum-Dormaa highway under its nationwide “Big Push” road infrastructure development project.
He said the highway, one of the busiest roads in the region, must be expanded to improve safety for commercial drivers, travellers, and motorists, while also reducing the frequent road crashes and fatalities recorded on the stretch.

Barimah Ababio made the appeal during the inauguration of a new Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) office at Dormaa-Ahenkro, where he welcomed the establishment of the facility.
“It has been an extremely difficult process for motorists and drivers to acquire licenses due to the absence of an office of the DVLA in the area. People had often endured long hours, travelling from Dormaa-Ahenkro to Sunyani to either acquire or renew their driving license,” he said.
The chief noted that Dormaa-Ahenkro had grown significantly in size and population, describing the new office as timely. He said it would serve not only Dormaa-Ahenkro but also Dormaa East, Dormaa West, Jaman North, and parts of the Western Region.
Barimah Ababio further urged drivers and motorists to regularly maintain their vehicles to ensure roadworthiness, stressing the need to make full use of the DVLA office to renew licenses and certificates.
He also called for the establishment of a driving school in the area and pledged the Dormaa Traditional Council’s support, including the provision of land for additional DVLA facilities. He urged the Authority to consider developing training manuals in local dialects to improve accessibility.
