Mr James Kofi Kyeremeh, Chairman of the Bono Regional Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has described former Vice President Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia as the most suitable flagbearer aspirant to lead the NPP in the 2028 General Election, citing his strong economic background and visionary leadership.
He said the party’s delegates must make informed decisions and endorse Dr Bawumia in the supreme interest of the party, adding that such a choice would enhance the NPP’s chances of retaining power in 2028.

The NPP has scheduled January 31, 2026, for its presidential primary to elect a flagbearer among five aspirants, Mr Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Mr Ken Ohene Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of a regional council of elders meeting in Sunyani, Mr Kyeremeh disclosed that 16 out of 18 council members were solidly behind Dr Bawumia and actively canvassing votes for his endorsement.
He emphasised that Ghana’s current economic challenges required a leader with “solid economic prowess” to transform the nation’s fortunes.
“Combined with his digitalization agenda, Alhaji Dr. Bawumia can drive rapid industrialization when he becomes the next president,” Mr. Kyeremeh stated.
While acknowledging that all five aspirants possessed valuable experience, Mr Kyeremeh maintained that the nation’s transformation hinged primarily on sound economic management.
“We therefore need a president who understands the dynamics and intricacies of economics to stabilize the economy and create a better society for all,” he said.
Nana Atta Fena, a member of both the Bono Regional Council of Elders and the Bawumia Regional Campaign Team, also highlighted Dr Bawumia’s loyalty, integrity, and strong grassroots appeal as qualities that make him the ideal choice.
“He has built a solid support base for himself, and we are confident our loyal delegates will endorse him for a resounding victory in 2028,” Nana Fena said.
Another elder, Mr Yaw Dabie Appiah Mensah, a founding member of the NPP in Sunyani West, urged delegates to remain loyal and vote massively for Dr Bawumia in the upcoming primary.
