Members of the Amansie West District Assembly have cautioned that a district-wide unrest could erupt if urgent measures are not taken to address alleged harassment and killings linked to military personnel guarding Asanko Mines.
In a petition to the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Prince Manu Morris, the Assembly accused the security officers of perpetuating violence that has already claimed lives, including the assembly member for the Aboaboso electoral area.

The assembly member was reportedly shot dead while attempting to mediate a confrontation between the youth and soldiers protecting the mining concession. Another young man was also killed, sparking anger that led to the burning of heavy-duty equipment belonging to the company.
Presenting the petition, Presiding Member Mr Antwi Amponsah described the killing as “shocking,” warning that the string of violent confrontations could escalate further if not urgently addressed.
The Assembly called on the DCE to escalate the matter to the Ashanti Regional Minister, President John Dramani Mahama, and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for a lasting solution.
They also raised concerns over the detention of another assembly member, Mr Patrick Boamah, allegedly held without charges, describing it as harassment and a violation of their rights that could worsen insecurity in the area.
Mr Morris assured the members that their grievances would be forwarded to higher authorities. He reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to safeguarding its members and the broader community, restoring peace, and ensuring justice for the victims.
