Asenso-Boakye calls flooding a national failure

Former Minister for Works and Housing Francis Asenso-Boakye has described Ghana’s recurring flooding as a national failure rather than a seasonal problem.

Speaking after the recent floods that affected parts of Accra and other communities, Hon. Asenso-Boakye said the country’s flooding crisis is the result of governance and planning failures rather than an unavoidable natural occurrence.

He attributed the problem to weak enforcement of planning and building regulations, inadequate investment in modern drainage infrastructure, poor waste management and uncontrolled urban development in flood-prone areas.

Hon. Asenso-Boakye called for strict enforcement of planning laws, increased investment in resilient drainage infrastructure, the demolition of structures built in waterways, improved early warning systems and greater public education on proper waste disposal.

He said addressing the flooding challenge requires sustained political commitment and a long-term, non-partisan approach, warning that the cycle of destruction and loss of lives will continue without decisive action.
