AMA warns of arrest, prosecution for littering sachet water waste

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced plans to arrest and prosecute individuals who indiscriminately dispose of sachet water waste on the streets of Accra.

According to the Assembly, the move forms part of intensified efforts to address poor sanitation and recurring flooding caused by choked drains.

AMA officials say the improper disposal of used sachet water plastics remains one of the major contributors to blocked gutters and environmental degradation in the capital.

The Assembly warned that sanitation enforcement teams will be deployed across key areas to monitor compliance, and offenders will be dealt with under existing sanitation bye-laws. Individuals caught littering could face fines or court action.

AMA also urged residents, traders, and commercial drivers to adopt responsible waste disposal practices and make use of designated bins and refuse collection services. The Assembly stressed that maintaining a clean city requires collective responsibility, not just enforcement.

The renewed crackdown comes as part of broader measures to improve environmental cleanliness, public health, and urban resilience, especially during the rainy season when flooding risks increase due to blocked drainage systems.
