The Eastern Regional Police said 34 suspects have been arrested and are assisting investigations at the Aburi Police Station. Officers recovered a pump-action gun and a pistol from the scene.
The clash reportedly erupted between the Abokomahene of the Asona Family, Nana Semenhyia Asakrofa, and the Abimuhene of Ahwerease, over who had the authority to perform the sacred ritual. The disagreement escalated into chaos when some young men opened fire, injuring four people, one of whom later died.
Eastern Regional Police PRO, Superintendent Ebenezer Tetteh, confirmed the arrests and said the weapons would undergo forensic examination. He assured that police patrols have been intensified to maintain peace during and after the festival.
“We are determined to ensure that calm is restored and that anyone found culpable will face the full rigours of the law,” he added.
The Odwira Festival, celebrated annually by the people of Akuapem, symbolises purification, unity, and thanksgiving. This year’s edition, however, was marred by violence, prompting calls for tighter security during traditional celebrations.
