Speaking at the commissioning, Alhaji Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng, Executive Director of CCF, said the initiative also complements the government’s “Nkokɔ Nketenkete” poultry programme, which seeks to reduce poultry imports, create jobs, expand veterinary services, and improve feed production. He added that CCF, with donor support, planned to replicate the initiative in at least 20 prison facilities nationwide.
Director of Prisons in charge of Agriculture, Mr Ali Ababio, speaking on behalf of the Director-General of Prisons, said the project reflected the Service’s commitment to reforming and rehabilitating inmates through agriculture while generating additional revenue. He noted that under the DG’s Kitchen Support Project, at least 10 prison establishments were being targeted to raise a minimum of 200,000 birds.
Deputy Director of Prisons, Victoria Adzawuda, Officer-in-Charge of the Nsawam Female Prison, said the project would contribute to sustainable agricultural practices, improve nutrition for inmates, provide reliable poultry products, and enhance training opportunities. She commended the agricultural team for their commitment and revealed that the facility already operates a 3,000-capacity catfish farm managed by officers and inmates.
The Prison authorities, CCF, and Rabotec all reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the poultry project achieves its intended purpose of rehabilitation, revenue generation, and long-term inmate empowerment.
