Ghana to host Global Students' COP27 Pre-Summit in Accra

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, in collaboration with the All-Africa Students Union (AASU) and the Global Student Forum (GSF), is hosting the Global Students’ COP27 Pre-Summit in Accra from October 10 to 14, 2022.

The event serves as a precursor to the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27), which is scheduled to take place in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, from November 6 to 18, 2022.

The five-day pre-summit has brought together students and young leaders from 16 countries, including Honduras, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, Latvia, the United States, Nigeria, Uganda and Kenya, to contribute to discussions on global climate policy ahead of COP27.

Participants will engage in masterclasses, expert panel discussions, mock negotiations and workshops focused on the impact of climate change on education and the policy measures required to strengthen sustainability and safeguard education systems worldwide.

The discussions are expected to generate recommendations that will contribute to policy debates during the main United Nations climate conference in Egypt.

COP27 is expected to focus on accelerating global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, strengthen climate adaptation measures and enhance resilience to the effects of climate change.

The organisers said the summit provides a platform for students and young people to amplify their voices and contribute meaningfully to international climate negotiations.

The Global Student Forum commended the Government of Ghana and the All-Africa Students Union for hosting the event in Accra, describing it as an important opportunity to elevate youth participation in global climate action.

At the end of the summit, participants are expected to adopt a global student declaration outlining their recommendations to world leaders attending COP27.
