The University of Ghana has issued a response to claims circulating on social media and Joy 99.7 FM, alleging that the institution collected over GHS11 million in graduation fees without providing essential items to graduands. In a statement released on February 17, 2025, the University clarified that these reports are misleading and do not accurately reflect the facts.

According to the University, the expected revenue from the GHS500 graduation fee paid by each of the 15,776 graduands amounts to GHS7,888,000, not the GHS11 million as reported. The fee covers a range of essential services and items, including the rental of graduation gowns and caps (or hoods), an official publication for the ceremony, a commemorative medallion, a scroll holder, a University-branded scarf for female graduates and a tie for male graduates, water provided during the ceremony, and administrative overheads.

The University acknowledged that while all of these items were provided, the distribution of the medallions and scroll holders was delayed. In an official notice dated February 10, 2025, the institution had informed graduates about procurement delays affecting these items and assured them that they would be distributed at a later date.

The University expressed disappointment over the sensational nature of the report by JoyNews, stating that the claims were published without verifying the facts with the institution. The University urged the public to disregard the misleading reports and rely on official communications for accurate information.
