The Coconut Federation of Ghana (COCOFEG), the country’s largest umbrella organisation in the coconut sector, has donated 81,000 hybrid coconut seedlings to the Techiman Municipal Directorate of Agriculture for distribution to small-holder farmers across the municipality. The initiative is aimed at scaling up agribusiness, strengthening the coconut sector, and improving the socio-economic livelihoods of farmers.
Mr Stephen Aidoo, Techiman Municipal Director of Agriculture, revealed that 61,000 of the seedlings have already been distributed, with the remaining 20,000 expected to reach farmers by the end of October 2025. In an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Techiman, he noted that over 500 small-scale and commercial farmers had registered to benefit from the programme, which has already seen seedlings planted on approximately 1,000 acres of farmland.

The distribution aligns with the government’s “Feed the Industry Programme,” designed to enhance household nutrition while building a robust foundation for agro-industrial growth and ensuring national food security. Mr Aidoo emphasised that coconut is an economic crop with significant resilience and versatility, creating employment for millions and supporting vibrant local and global markets. He added that Ghana produces over 65 million metric tons of coconut annually, with small-holder farmers contributing about 95 percent of the output.
Under the programme, the directorate is expected to distribute a total of three million hybrid coconut seedlings nationwide, reinforcing the strategic role of the coconut sector in driving economic growth and agro-industrial development.
