A Rocha Deputy Director criticizes Government over galamsey issue exclusion from SONA

Daryl Bosu, the Deputy National Director of A Rocha, has strongly criticized the administration for its failure to address the pressing issue of , commonly known as ‘Galamsey', during the recent State of the Nation Address ().

Bosu highlighted the absence of environmental challenges, particularly related to , from President Nana 's delivered on February 27. He expressed disappointment at the government's apparent neglect of critical environmental issues, attributing it to their controversial nature and the lack of tangible progress in addressing them.

Speaking on Citi TV's Point of View, Bosu condemned the activities of illegal miners, which have caused extensive damage to the nation's water bodies and natural environment. He squarely placed the responsibility for the government's poor performance in tackling environmental issues.

“The President's omission of ‘Galamsey' issues from the State of the Nation Address is indicative of the ongoing presence and detrimental effects of illegal mining in the country,” Bosu stated emphatically.

He further underscored the widespread pollution and degradation of Ghana's rivers, water bodies, and farmlands due to illegal mining activities. Bosu lamented the adverse impact on public health, highlighting the unprecedented pollution caused by heavy metals and residue resulting from illegal mining operations.

Bosu concluded by emphasizing the urgent need for decisive action to address the ‘Galamsey' menace and mitigate its detrimental effects on the environment, public health, and livelihoods. He urged the government to prioritize environmental protection and enforcement measures to combat illegal mining effectively.
