NPA CEO Edudzi Tameklo urges support for lesser-known sports following Golden Arms’ world championship success

Mr Edudzi Kudzo Tameklo, Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), has called on Corporate Ghana and state institutions to back the development and promotion of lesser-financed sports to gain greater recognition, stressing the role of government in policy and support.

He made the appeal while commending the national armwrestling team, Golden Arms, for their outstanding performance on the world stage. “Armwrestling, often considered one of the least financed sports, deserves better recognition and support for the team’s dedication and perseverance in bringing home multiple medals for Ghana in major championships,” he said.

The remarks came during a courtesy visit by the Golden Arms to the NPA headquarters, where the team presented medals won at the World Armwrestling Championship and expressed gratitude for the support received during the 14th Africa Armwrestling Championship held in Abuja, Nigeria.

Mr Tameklo praised the team for winning two silver and one bronze medal at the World Championships and encouraged them to maintain discipline and strive for even greater achievements. “With the record you will set, people will be struggling to get there, so I urge you to keep fighting—the sky cannot be your limit,” he added.

He also commended Mr Charles Osei Asibey, President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, for his commitment and investment in the sport, which has significantly contributed to its growth nationally and internationally.

Mr Asibey noted that the visit was to show appreciation for NPA’s support, which had enabled the athletes to train effectively and build momentum for their performances. Earlier in the year, the Golden Arms had won 55 medals, and at the World Championship, athletes Mabel Yeboah and Blessed Abeka Nunoo secured two silver and one bronze medal.

Looking ahead, the Golden Arms are now preparing for the 2026 Africa Armwrestling Championship, to be hosted in Accra, and the 2027 African Games in Egypt.

Present at the meeting were Mr Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee; Mr Husseini Addy, Technical Director of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation; and Mr Kenneth Odeng Adade.
