GUTA urges government to embrace solar energy to address power challenges

The () has called on the government to diversify the country's energy sources by embracing alternative options such as solar energy. Dr. Joseph Obeng, President of , emphasized the importance of reducing the heavy reliance on hydro and thermal power to ensure a more reliable and affordable energy mix.

In an exclusive with the Ghana Agency, Dr. Obeng highlighted the need to integrate solar energy into the national grid to mitigate the persistent power outages plaguing the country. He expressed concern over the detrimental effects of erratic power supply, including disruptions to businesses, increased noise pollution, and the risk of fire outbreaks in congested markets due to the widespread use of generators.

Dr. Obeng stressed the urgency of adopting alternative energy sources, citing the abundance of solar energy in the country. He called for clear policies to incentivize households and businesses to invest in solar energy systems, which would contribute to the national grid and reduce dependence on traditional power sources.

While acknowledging the initial capital investment required for solar energy systems, Dr. Obeng emphasized the long-term benefits and urged the government to provide policy support and compensation for those willing to invest in alternative energy solutions.

He highlighted the adverse impact of power outages on digital trade, noting that disruptions to online platforms hindered business operations. Dr. Obeng emphasized the need for swift action to address the power challenges, particularly in light of the economic repercussions of previous crises.

The recent power outages have been attributed to a financing gap of US$1.9 billion, with the (ECG) struggling to meet revenue targets. Despite efforts to improve revenue collection, ECG falls short of the monthly revenue required for operational expenses, exacerbating the power supply challenges.

In conclusion, Dr. Obeng emphasized the importance of finding sustainable solutions to the power crisis and urged the government to prioritize the adoption of solar energy to enhance energy reliability and support economic growth.
