Tidal surge displaces hundreds in Keta, Volta Region

Residents of Abutiakope, Aborigines beach, and surrounding communities in , , have been displaced by a recent tidal surge, causing extensive damage to buildings and personal belongings.

According to Mr. Promise Kofi Baccah, the Assembly member of Abutiakope Electoral Area, the incident occurred during the early hours of Thursday, February 15. He reported significant displacement of residents, with numerous properties, including electronics and household items, destroyed, resulting in financial losses amounting to thousands of Ghana cedis.

The tidal surge also wreaked havoc on recreational areas along the shores, destroying summer hats, coconut trees, and other infrastructure.

Mr. Baccah highlighted the dire situation faced by the affected residents, many of whom were left homeless and seeking refuge with relatives. He emphasized the urgent need for the construction of a sea defense wall to protect the community from future tidal waves and prevent loss of life.

Additionally, the surge caused substantial damage to livelihoods, including farms, boats, canoes, and fishing nets, leaving many residents without means of sustenance.

In response to the crisis, Mr. Baccah appealed for support from individuals, philanthropists, corporate entities, and the government to address the situation promptly and prevent further hardship and potential disasters.

The observed affected victims seeking shelter with friends and relatives, while others considered relocating to alternative communities.

As of now, authorities in the area have not provided updates on the situation, leaving residents anxiously awaiting assistance and relief efforts.
