CAF launches investigation into incidents between Morocco and Congo at AFCON 2023

The Confederation of African Football () has initiated an investigation into post-match incidents involving the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (“FRMF”) and the Congolese Association Football Federation (“FECOFA”) during the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cote d'Ivoire 2023 fixture between and the .

In a statement released by CAF, it was confirmed that the investigation is underway, and no further comments will be made until the process is complete.

The investigation follows a melee that broke out between players and coaching staff from and Congo after their 1-1 draw during the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday.

The incident was sparked when Morocco coach Walid Regragui approached Congo captain Chancel Mbemba after the match. Mbemba, who had already received a yellow card for disputing a referee decision, appeared to disagree with Regragui's comments. This led to a confrontation, with players from both teams rushing in and officials attempting to control the ensuing pushing and shoving.

“It's the heat. It's a big match between two big nations,” explained Congo coach Sébastien Desabre. “It's very hot. Very, very, very hot.”
