GES outlines SHS and SHTS programme options for 2026 BECE candidates

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has outlined the available Senior High School (SHS) and Senior High Technical School (SHTS) programme options for candidates preparing to select schools under the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) placement process.

According to an update shared by the Education Resource Centre Ghana and the GES, graduates entering SHS and SHTS will be required to choose from nine learning areas or programmes, which will guide their academic pathways at the second-cycle level.

The programmes include General Science, General Arts, Business Studies, Home Economics, Visual and Performing Arts, Agriculture Studies, Applied Technology, Languages, and Global Studies.

Authorities noted that once students are placed in schools, they will have the opportunity to combine different subjects based on their chosen learning areas and the capacity and focus areas of their respective schools.

The GES explained that the structure is designed to provide learners with flexible academic pathways and better preparation for tertiary education and future career opportunities.

Officials further stated that the system allows flexibility within and between learning areas, enabling students to explore multiple academic and career pathways depending on their interests and strengths.

Students were advised to carefully select programmes aligned with their interests and long-term career aspirations to make informed educational choices.

Education authorities emphasised that the updated structure aims to improve learning outcomes and better align secondary education with the demands of higher education and the job market.
