Ghana begins evacuation of citizens from South Africa

The Government of Ghana has announced a special evacuation exercise for Ghanaians currently residing in South Africa, with the first batch of 300 citizens scheduled to return home on May 21, 2026.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the evacuation will be conducted via a specially chartered flight departing at 5:00 a.m. from O.R. Tambo International Airport. The operation is being offered as a free service fully funded by the Government of Ghana.

The government said the welfare and safety of Ghanaian nationals abroad remains a top priority under President John Dramani Mahama, describing the exercise as part of efforts to protect citizens in emergency or high-risk situations abroad.

The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria will coordinate further arrangements and serve as the main contact point for affected citizens seeking assistance or information.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has directed citizens to its official website for updates and guidance. The evacuation is part of ongoing consular efforts to ensure the safe return of Ghanaians abroad, with additional batches expected depending on operational arrangements and demand.
