The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced an immediate ban on the sale of explosive and highly inflammable materials within the Kumasi City Market and its surrounding areas.
In a statement issued on February 26, 2026, the Assembly informed traders and the general public that the directive is aimed at safeguarding lives and property and preventing potential fire outbreaks and disasters in the market.

Under the new directive, dealers and traders dealing in explosive materials ,including carbide, petrol (gasoline), acid, gas, black powder, smokeless powder, and other highly inflammable substances ,have been given up to Sunday, March 1, 2026, to remove their stock from the Kumasi City Market and relocate to the Racecourse Market.
The Assembly indicated that a joint security task force will begin enforcement after the deadline.
The team will comprise personnel from the military, fire service, police, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and national security agencies.
The task force is expected to conduct inspections and take action against traders who fail to comply with the directive.
Management of the Assembly stressed that the decision forms part of broader efforts to improve safety standards within the busy commercial hub and reduce the risk of fire incidents that could lead to significant loss of life and property.
The KMA urged all affected traders to cooperate fully to ensure a smooth transition and compliance with the new safety measures.
