Ghana’s vibrant Chale Wote Street Art Festival, renowned for its innovative contemporary works of art, will be held from August 21 to August 27, 2023, at the historic Black Star Square in Accra.
The festival celebrates over a decade of showcasing iconic public art interventions by African artists and international collaborators.
This year’s event, held in the Osu municipality, will feature open-air mural exhibitions by leading Ghanaian and international artists, portraying the rebellion of enslaved Afro-Brazilians in 1835 Salvador Bahia and their return to present-day Ghana, Togo, and Nigeria.
Apart from the mural exhibitions, the festival will include performance art, graffiti, music stages with 120 musicians and bands, LABS, Salons, design, photography, street theatre, and the SHIKA SHIKA Art Fair at the Christianborg Castle.
Additionally, the Chale Wote Film LABS and knowledge-sharing salons will offer hands-on digital art and photography training sessions, showcasing 17 films from Ghana, the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa.
Visitors can also enjoy walking tours to explore historical sites and buildings within the Osu community. The festival will introduce the world-famous Highlife Café at the Black Star Square and the Accra Cookout, serving local dishes and obscure delicacies.
Chale Wote Street Art Festival, since its inception in 2011, has gained a reputation for featuring hundreds of performances and exhibitions, connecting African audiences to authentic creators and independent art production.
Supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture, Ghana Tourism Authority, and various other partners, the festival promises an unforgettable multi-disciplinary art experience, hosting the industry’s biggest acts and celebrating the rich artistic culture of Africa.
