Nestle Ghana Limited has responded to criticisms regarding the addition of sugars to baby food in some countries, clarifying that they do not add sugars, such as sucrose and glucose, to infant formulas for children in Ghana.

In a press release, the company stated, “Like everywhere in the , in Ghana, we do not add sugars (sucrose and glucose) to Infant formula for children aged 0-12 months.” They further noted that the majority of their Growing Up Milks in Ghana have no added sugars, except for NIDO 1+, which currently includes honey. However, by the end of 2024, honey will be removed from NIDO 1+, making it free of any added sugars.

This statement comes in response to an analysis by an organization advocating for human rights observance by Swiss-based companies, which raised concerns about the sugar content in Nestle's baby food in some countries.

The company emphasized that Baby Food and Infant Formula are highly regulated categories, and Nestle applies the same nutrition, health, and wellness principles worldwide, aligning with international and local guidelines and regulations. This includes compliance with labelling requirements and thresholds on carbohydrate content, encompassing sugars.

While Nestle acknowledged slight variations in cereal recipes around the , they emphasized that their milk and cereals for young children in Central and are fortified with essential vitamins and minerals, such as iron, to address malnutrition.

In conclusion, Nestle Ghana Limited reaffirmed its commitment to providing nutritious and compliant products for infants and young children, ensuring their health and well-being in accordance with global standards.
