UE Peace Council, Catholic Diocese condemn military brutalities in Garu

, Ghana – The Regional Peace Council and the Catholic Diocese of - have issued a joint press release expressing their grave concern over reported military brutalities in Garu and its surrounding areas.

The statement, released on October 31, 2023, strongly condemns the violence inflicted on civilians and extends solidarity to the victims of these brutalities.

The organisations highlighted their extensive efforts to foster peace and trust in border communities, including Garu and Tempane.

Their initiatives have focused on building cohesive communities and enhancing security-community interactions, drawing from successful experiences in countering extremist activities, particularly in the Sahel Region.

Their work has been aligned with the Ministry of 's “see something, say something” campaign, launched in 2022.

The joint statement expressed shock and dismay at the recent disturbing incidents in Garu, involving military actions against the local youth, resulting in multiple casualties on October 29, 2023.

These events have not only caused fear and panic among the local population but also raised concerns about the potential damage to cooperation between residents and security forces in countering violent extremism.

The Regional Peace Council and the Catholic Diocese of -Bolgatanga called for a thorough and independent investigation into the incidents, involving both National Intelligence personnel and local youth, as well as the military and the youth.

They also urgently called on the government to ensure that those injured receive necessary medical attention and the safety of those arrested is guaranteed.

Furthermore, the statement urged the Ministry of and the to adopt a more professional approach to restoring security and peace, avoiding the use of brutal force while respecting the dignity of every individual involved.

The organisations appealed to the people of Garu and its environs to uphold their reputation as law-abiding citizens and respect the state's security apparatus.

The joint statement encouraged civil society and all peace actors to actively engage in matters concerning the safety and security of the region, emphasizing the need for collective and collaborative efforts to restore security and peace in and its surroundings.

In closing, the Upper East Regional Peace Council and the Catholic Diocese offered prayers for healing and inner peace for the victims, their families, and all affected by the recent tragic incidents.
