The bodies of two teenage girls, Alicia and Anita Asare, aged 13 and pupils of the Sanfo-Aduam SDA Junior High School, have been laid to rest after they were tragically found drowned in a galamsey pit at Sanfo-Aduam in the Bekwai Municipality.
The incident occurred on Friday, April 21, when the girls went swimming in a nearby river with their friends, which was surrounded by several galamsey pits in the community.
After many hours of search by community members, the bodies of the girls were finally retrieved.
The burial ceremony was filled with sorrow as family members, school children, and community members mourned the loss.
Expressing their grief, some mourners expressed anger over the abundance of abandoned galamsey pits in the community.
They called on the local authorities to take action in covering these pits left behind by illegal miners to ensure the safety of residents.
