Mr Yaw Dankwah, the defence counsel in the murder case of the former MP for Abuakwa North, has asserted that Daniel Asiedu, the first accused person, did not kill the former legislator. Instead, he alleged that the former MP was killed by three police impersonators who visited the deceased's home.
Dankwah claimed that after committing the crime, the impersonators vanished into thin air, a fact allegedly confirmed by the evidence of one Apraku, the security guard who reported the matter to the police via phone calls.
The defence argued that the late MP, being tall and well-built, could not have been overpowered by Asiedu alone. Dankwah stated, “It was the three impersonating officers who overpowered the MP and killed him at his residence… Asiedu cannot overpower the MP physically.”
However, ASP Augustine Nkrumah, the case investigator, contradicted this assertion, stating that it was Daniel Asiedu who killed the former MP. Nkrumah described Asiedu as “a terrible person” capable of such a crime.
The investigator presented evidence of weapons used in the crime, retrieved from Asiedu, including a knife, a T-shirt, and a handkerchief soaked with blood. Asiedu's girlfriend, Janet Kyeraa, corroborated the evidence, confirming to the police that the items belonged to Asiedu. Kyeraa also reported that Asiedu gave her a blood-stained knife to clean after the incident.
Furthermore, Nkrumah detailed how Asiedu's slippers were found at the crime scene, along with a catapult and a cutter, identified by Asiedu. Asiedu admitted to using a knife found in his room during the crime, claiming he left the deceased helpless.
During investigations, Asiedu reportedly asked for forgiveness in the deceased's room, admitting to the offence he had committed. He demonstrated to the investigation team how he perpetrated the crime and acknowledged sending the exhibits found in the deceased's room.
Daniel Asiedu is standing trial for his involvement in the murder of the former MP for Abuakwa North and has been charged with murder and robbery. He is jointly accused, along with Vincent Bossu, of conspiring to rob the MP. Both have denied the charges before a seven-member jury.
The court, presided over by Mrs. Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, has remanded the accused persons to reappear on February 28, 2024.
