John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, has expressed strong disapproval of President Nana Akufo-Addo's decision to redirect funds from the Saglemi Housing Project to the National Cathedral Project.
In a Facebook post, Mahama alleged that the government's abandonment of the Saglemi Housing project was due to its initiation during his administration.
He stated, “Knowing the NPP government, they did not want to complete the Saglemi housing project simply because it was initiated by John Mahama and an NDC administration.”
President Akufo-Addo recently initiated the construction of 8,000 units of affordable houses with private sector support, justifying the abandonment of the Saglemi Housing Project by stating that completing it would have increased the national debt.
Responding to this explanation, Mahama criticized the government, stating that the allocation of substantial funds to the National Cathedral while neglecting the Saglemi housing project was a “humiliating slap in the face of Ghanaians.”
He argued that the government's priorities were misplaced, highlighting the investment in a large civil excavation for the National Cathedral while ignoring a housing project aimed at providing affordable homes for citizens.
Mahama emphasized that leadership should prioritize citizens' well-being and ensure that government resources benefit the people, regardless of which administration initiated the projects.
He said, “Leaders must always prioritize the well-being of their citizens and ensure that they benefit from government resources and projects, regardless of who initiated them.”
The former President criticized the government's claim of being unable to raise funds to complete the Saglemi housing project while allocating significant funds for the National Cathedral. He highlighted the missed opportunities for thousands of Ghanaian families to have decent living conditions and a true home.
