President Akufo-Addo has emphasized the potential of tourism as an economic activity to drive growth, create jobs, and foster prosperity for the people of Ghana.
During the commissioning ceremony of the redeveloped Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, the president called upon the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and its sector agencies to intensify their efforts in promoting domestic tourism.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted that a successful domestic tourism drive would not only enable Ghanaians to appreciate their rich heritage but also contribute to national unity and stimulate economic growth.
He urged the ministry and its agencies to promote local products, as their patronage would enhance the economy and create employment opportunities.
Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, emphasized Ghana's unique tourism potential, particularly in heritage and political tourism.
He mentioned plans to modernize the DuBois Centre and the Osu Castle, and to connect various attractions such as the Kwame Nkrumah Park, the National Museum, and forts and castles to position Ghana as an attractive tourist destination in Africa.
Dr Awal projected that, with continued investment and efforts in the sector, tourism could generate between 6 to 7 billion dollars per year within the next three years, making it a significant contributor to the Ghanaian economy.
The redeveloped Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, which generates substantial revenue from tourists, was applauded by Samia Nkrumah, daughter of Ghana's first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
She expressed gratitude to President Akufo-Addo and his administration for realizing the project and noted that the park served as a source of inspiration and strength to fulfill the unaccomplished mission and promise of Ghana's independence.
The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, established in 1992 to honor Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, features a museum, mausoleum, and a bronze statue of the former president.
The recent redevelopment, led by the government under President Akufo-Addo, introduced a modern reception center, a library, an eatery, a gift shop, and a conference facility. The park now also boasts an audio-visually synchronized fountain, an amphitheater, and a picnic area.
