“We can’t drop Jordan; his experience is much needed,” he said.
The discussion comes as Ghana prepares for what analysts describe as a decisive match against England, with progression to the next stage of the tournament potentially at stake.
Jordan Ayew’s role has emerged as one of the most debated topics within the Black Stars setup. While some critics argue that he holds onto the ball for too long and slows attacking transitions, supporters point to his experience, pressing ability, and tactical importance.
Analysts noted that Ayew often performs a deeper role, linking play and creating space for Ghana’s pacey attackers. He was also credited with recording the team’s highest pressing statistics in the victory over Panama.
Others, however, believe younger options such as Thomas Asante could provide greater speed and impact, particularly against tiring defences.
Despite the debate, Billy maintained that Ayew’s experience will be crucial against England’s defence, particularly as Ghana seeks to exploit weaknesses in the opposition’s backline.
The Black Stars head into the match buoyed by their victory over Panama, a result that sparked celebrations across Ghana and strengthened hopes of progression.
The win also highlighted Ghana’s defensive resilience. Backup goalkeeper Ibrahim Danlad, who stepped in for the injured Lawrence Ati-Zigi, earned praise for his composure and command of aerial situations.
In midfield, Khalib Burshi emerged as one of Ghana’s standout performers. His work rate, discipline, and ability to transition play from defence to attack drew widespread praise, with reports indicating that former Black Stars midfielder Michael Essien sees similarities between his own style and that of the young player.
Looking ahead to England, analysts believe Ghana’s tactical priorities must include containing Harry Kane and disrupting Declan Rice’s influence in midfield.
Suggestions have also been made for Ghana to use Jordan Ayew’s experience to stretch England defender John Stones, force defensive errors, and create opportunities for the team’s attacking players.
