The Sports Writers’ Association of Ghana (SWAG) has strongly condemned the assault on Berekum-based sports journalist Samuel Appiah during a Ghana Premier League match at Berekum.
In a statement signed by its President, Mr Kwabena Yeboah, the association described the attack as barbaric and uncivilised, stressing that such acts have no place in Ghanaian football.

SWAG said it would engage the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Bono Regional Police Command, Berekum Chelsea Football Club and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident and the prosecution of those responsible.
Mr Appiah, a journalist with Chris FM in Berekum, was allegedly assaulted by supporters of Berekum Chelsea on Saturday, January 15, following the Ghana Premier League fixture between Berekum Chelsea and Asante Kotoko.
According to the journalist, Nana Kwame Nketsia of Berekum Chelsea and three other individuals allegedly dragged him from the post-match press conference venue and physically assaulted him.
SWAG expressed concern that attacks on journalists undermine press freedom and threaten efforts to promote professionalism and transparency in sports reporting.
The association said incidents of violence against media practitioners do not augur well for the development of football in Ghana and called on all stakeholders to work together to ensure the safety and security of journalists covering sporting events.
