Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA Sports), sports enthusiast Mr Fred Dadadzogbor at Anlo-Afiadenyigba junction applauded the balance of experienced and youthful players in the squad. He particularly praised the inclusion of goalkeeper Joseph Anang of Saint Patrick’s Athletic, Caleb Yirenkyi of FC Nordsjaelland, Christopher Bonsu Baah of Al-Qadsiah and Jonas Adjetey of FC Basel.
“We are still analysing the strengths and weaknesses of the selected players, with some expressing concerns about the team’s chances against Chad and Mali,” he said, adding that expectations remained high for the Black Stars to qualify.
Another fan, Mr Freeman Dogbey, expressed confidence that the team would prevail, citing Ghana’s strong performances in earlier qualifiers. “The coach’s selection criteria have been questioned by some fans… but I think the current players will do the job,” he noted.
Some supporters, however, suggested that experienced captain Dede Ayew should have been included, arguing that his leadership could have boosted the squad. Others maintained that the selected players had the right skills and experience to deliver results.
Coach Otto Addo’s 24-man squad comprises three goalkeepers, eight defenders, six midfielders and seven attackers. Ghana is set to face Chad on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at Stade Olympique Marcel, N’djamena at 1300 hours, before taking on Mali on Monday, September 8, 2025, at the Accra Sports Stadium at 1900 hours.
The Black Stars had earlier defeated Mali 2-1 and Chad 5-0 in the first-leg encounters and will resume camping on Monday, September 1, 2025.
Current Group I standings of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers show Ghana leading with 15 points, followed by Comoros with 12, Madagascar 10, Mali 9, Central African Republic 5, and Chad with no points.
Only the group winner qualifies directly for the World Cup, while the runner-up may compete in the second round for a chance at the inter-confederation play-offs.
