Madam Benedicta Lasi, Secretary-General of Socialist International, paid a courtesy visit to Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin at Parliament House in Accra.
The meeting aimed to highlight the importance of empowering more Ghanaian women to assume leadership roles at the international level, according to a statement issued by the Public Affairs Directorate of Parliament.
During the meeting, Madam Lasi expressed her gratitude to Speaker Bagbin for his mentorship and support throughout her political journey, acknowledging the significant role it played in her achievements thus far.
She commended the Speaker for his efforts in promoting women's inclusion in the governance structure of the country and encouraged women not to be discouraged by threats and insults from male opponents.
In response, Speaker Bagbin thanked Madam Lasi for her visit and congratulated her on her historic achievement of becoming the first woman, first African, and youngest person to lead the 132-member organization at the age of 35.
He expressed his desire to empower more women in political leadership, highlighting his support for breaking down discriminatory barriers and celebrating women who overcome challenges to bring pride to Ghana and the continent.
The Speaker assured the Secretary-General of his support, along with that of Parliament, in ensuring she leaves a lasting impact in her new role.
