President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has pledged the government's commitment to meeting domestic poultry production targets for the year 2024. This initiative aims to reduce the country's reliance on imported poultry products and achieve food self-sufficiency.
During his delivery of the State of the Nation Address 2024 (SONA) in Parliament on February 27, 2024, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of prioritizing the poultry industry. He acknowledged the country's failure to meet its 2023 poultry production targets and pledged to address this issue in the current year.
The President highlighted the government's review of the Planting for Food and Jobs programme, a priority initiative aimed at increasing food sufficiency in the country. As part of the review, a five-year agenda was established, focusing on the production of eleven key agricultural products from September 2023 to December 2026.
While the production targets for maize, rice, soybean, sorghum, tomato, pepper, onion, cassava, yam, and plantain were met, poultry production fell short of expectations. President Akufo-Addo underscored the government's commitment to addressing this gap by providing additional support to the poultry industry.
President Akufo-Addo emphasized the crucial role of food self-sufficiency in ensuring national security and prosperity. He assured that the government would prioritize efforts to enhance poultry production and strengthen the agricultural sector as a whole.
Prior to this announcement, stakeholders in the poultry industry had urged the President to implement effective policies to support the sector's growth. The government's commitment to boosting domestic poultry production signals a concerted effort to achieve food security and economic stability in Ghana.
