The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced it will not participate in the upcoming Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election to replace the late Alhaji Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed. The MP was among eight people who died in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, while serving the Republic.
The decision was reached at a National Steering Committee meeting held on Monday, August 11, 2025, at the Party Headquarters, in line with Article 10(10)(1) of the NPP Constitution. The Party cited several considerations, including the circumstances surrounding the vacancy and concerns over further polarisation at a critical time.

The NPP said it would be inhumane and unconscionable to subject the nation to a competitive process so soon after the tragedy. It added that the tension and acrimony often linked to by-elections should be avoided. According to the Party, the greatest tribute to the late MP and the others who perished is not only to intensify the fight against illegal mining but also to ensure a smooth and peaceful replacement for the people of Tamale Central.
The Party confirmed that when the Electoral Commission opens nominations under Article 112(5) of Ghana’s Constitution, it will, in the national interest, abstain from the contest.
The statement was signed by NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong.
