Joe Ghartey informs Akufo-Addo of NPP presidential bid

Former Attorney-General and Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan, Joe Ghartey, has formally informed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of his decision to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries.

Mr Ghartey paid a courtesy call on the President at Jubilee House in Accra to officially communicate his intention to seek the party’s flagbearer position ahead of the 2024 general election.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Ghartey said the visit also gave him the opportunity to express gratitude to President Akufo-Addo for the confidence reposed in him during his administration, particularly his appointment as Minister for Railways Development after serving as Attorney-General and Minister of Justice.

He assured the President that his campaign would be conducted in a peaceful and respectful manner, adding that his team would uphold the values of unity and discipline throughout the contest.

Mr Ghartey said he would not tolerate attacks or misconduct by members of his campaign team and would take immediate action against anyone who engaged in behaviour likely to undermine party cohesion.

He also thanked the President for granting him an audience and wished him and his administration continued success.

President Akufo-Addo, in response, wished Mr Ghartey well in his bid and reiterated his commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent presidential primary.

The President said his overriding objective was to see the NPP retain political power beyond the 2024 general election and pledged to support whoever emerged victorious in the party’s internal contest.

He further urged all aspirants to conduct their campaigns decently and in a manner that would preserve the unity of the governing party.
